Visit from Transport Minister
The group was thrilled to have Humza Yousaf our local MSP and Minister for Transport and Islands in the Scottish Government sit in on our meeting today. We chatted about the group and Govan's rich social history, Humza seemed a down to earth guy who was sincerely interested in what the group is doing.
This year for our annual outing we decided to visit the "Gateway to the Isles" with a nice train ride to Oban. The group had a great time having lunch which was followed by a great tour of the historic 18th century Oban Distillery where some of our members took the opportunity to have a wee dram.
Refreshed, the group enjoyed a nice scenic journey home on the train to Glasgow. Where to next year?
Group's 29th AGM
The group held its 29th Annual General Meeting today, in the past year we continued to reminisce about Govan's past, we have also assisted several university student with their research and visited S1 pupils at Govan High to speak about the changes in Govan over the years.
Thanks to the Big Lottery Fund we now have the equiptment to digitise the many hours of oral recordings made by the group over the years, the group is pictured above with these recordings which are currently on CD, the first of these to be digitised are memories of the Great War 1914-18 by Bill Hughes, which you can listen to at the following link: The Great War by Bill Hughes
The group looks forward to the coming year and are always happy to have new members.
Govan Retold, thanks to Awards for All!
The Govan Reminiscence Group would like to thank the Big Lottery Fund for awarding our group £4,450 from the Awards for All Scotland programme. The money has enabled the group to purchase modern digital media equipment that will not only allow us to digitise our extensive collection of oral history recordings but also allow us to show high quality pictures, videos and short films showcasing Govan through the ages. We also aim to engage with local community groups and schools to retell and celebrate the history of Govan and ensure that it's past is not forgotten by local people. We also aim to breakdown social isolation in the elderly community of Govan by encouraging elderly members of the community to participate and share their stories.
